Ørsted completes construction of the 518 MW Helena Energy Center in Texas, USA

Ørsted has completed construction of the 518 MW Helena Energy Center, a combined wind and solar project in Bee County, Texas.

The center, which connects the 268 MW Helena wind farm and the 250 MWac (megawatt alternating current) Sparta solar farm, is now fully operational.

It will provide green electricity to 110,000 Texas homes and businesses each year.

The Helena Energy Center consists of 66 wind turbines and 600,000 solar panels.

Agreements are already concluded with many corporate customers.

During the construction phase, the Helena Energy Center created 500 construction jobs and is expected to continue creating operations and maintenance jobs for decades.

Ørsted Americas Region Executive Vice President and General Manager David Hardy stated: “Helena Energy Center is unique in that it is Ørsted’s first co-located wind and solar project and the largest renewable energy project in our global onshore portfolio.

“By taking advantage of the Gulf of Mexico’s strong offshore winds and abundant sunlight, the project will provide reliable power to the Texas grid and economic opportunities for the local community.

“At full capacity, Helena Energy Center increases Ørsted’s global onshore operating portfolio to 4.8 GW. We look forward to building on this momentum as more onshore projects come to the U.S. this year.”

Ørsted is also expanding its renewables portfolio with 1.3 GW of onshore assets currently under construction.

A capacity of approximately 1.1 GW is expected to come online in 2024.

In June, Ørsted announced it would install a Tesla battery energy storage system at its Hornsea 3 wind farm off the coast of East Anglia in the UK.

With a capacity of 600 MW, the battery will be sufficient to meet the energy needs of 80,000 homes in the UK.

The construction is to be completed by the end of 2026 and will be one of the largest facilities of this type in Europe.
