ByteDance confirms layoff plan in its Indonesian unit

China’s ByteDance will lay off workers at its Indonesian unit after closing a deal to integrate the local e-commerce company with TikTok.

Following a deal to acquire a local e-commerce company and integrate it with TikTok, China’s ByteDance will lay off employees at its Indonesian unit, a spokesman said on Friday.

TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, did not disclose how many employees were affected. According to previous Bloomberg reports, 450 people were to be dismissed. In January, GoTo Group sold a controlling stake in Indonesian e-commerce company Tokopedia to ByteDance. In a statement, ByteDance spokesman Nuraini Razak said the company “will make necessary changes” as a result of the TikTok and Tokopedia merger.

We have found ways to better align the team with the company’s goals and strengthen our organization,” the speaker said, adding that the company “will strive to help employees during this transition.” Through the TikTok app, ByteDance ran its own e-commerce business in Indonesia. However, this was prohibited by Indonesian law, which stipulated that social media applications could not be used as e-commerce platforms.

One of the leading e-commerce sites in Southeast Asia’s largest economy is Tokope.
