Once again, LCCI tasks the government with consistent reforms and policies |

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has tasked the government to ensure clear and consistent communication to businesses and the public on economic reforms and policies.

The Chamber expressed this in a press statement signed on Thursday by its Director General, Dr. Koniecznere Almon.

The LCCI said this was intended to reduce uncertainty, build trust and establish transparent mechanisms for tracking and reporting on progress made as a result of reforms.

Almona’s appeal was the LCCI’s response to President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech on Wednesday, which she said was a pivotal moment for Nigeria to reflect on the nation’s 25-year democratic journey and its roadmap for the future.

Joining all Nigerians in celebrating the peaceful transition and commitment to democratic values over the past 25 years, LCCI maintained that a stable political environment is very important for business success and attracting foreign investment.

“Beyond rhetorical speeches, the government must remain committed to implementing proposed programs and ongoing reforms so that Nigerians can reap the benefits of democracy without further delay,” Almona stressed.

To this end, the LCCI Director General urged the government to provide targeted support to businesses to reduce cost burdens from energy, logistics and regulatory compliance, recommending cashless interventions that can alleviate difficult production conditions.

Almona’s other recommendations include: “Expanding social safety net programs to support households affected by high costs of living and inflation during the transition, as well as increasing funding for public services such as health care, education and social services.

“Fostering an environment of cooperation between government, business, civil society and trade unions to ensure fair and timely negotiations on wages and working conditions, and to implement continuous dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent labor unrest.

“Implement programs to support strategic industries that are critical to job creation, tax revenues and infrastructure development.

“Remain sensitive to the concerns and views of the organized private sector (OPS) and engage in more consultations to achieve better implementation of policies.”

Almona added that while recognizing the short-term challenges, the LCCI remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of the proposed and implemented reforms, adding that the Chamber stands ready to support initiatives that foster economic growth, political stability and continued progress “in our democratic journey “.

“President Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech presents an ambitious and optimistic vision for Nigeria’s future. “His focus on economic diversification, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure and anti-corruption measures reflects a comprehensive approach to solving the problems facing the country,” she noted.

As Nigeria reflects on the progress made and the road ahead, LCCI urged the government to be serious about implementing the required reforms towards a more sustainable economy.
