In the USA, fossil fuels are being replaced by clean energy

Fossil fuels account for a decreasing share of new installed capacity in the US. According to Recharge News, even relatively cheap natural gas is virtually at a standstill, while renewable energy sources account for the lion’s share of new generation capacity this year.

In the first four months of the year, only 67 megawatts (MW) of natural gas power plants came online. This represents a 99% reduction compared to 5.1 gigawatts (GW) for the same period in 2023.

Additionally, natural gas is the main energy supplier in the US as it accounts for 43.5% of the country’s total generating capacity of 1.3 terawatts (TW).

Conversely, solar energy is the main driver of new installations. In the first four months of the year, 7.9 GW of solar capacity was installed, compared to 3.8 GW in the same period last year.

At the same time, wind installations, which are more affected by price increases, allowing for challenges and local opposition, reached 1.8 GW compared to 2.0 GW a year earlier.

In the first four months of the year, 5 MW of new oil capacity was installed, while in the case of hard coal this figure was close to zero.
