Preconditions

Before you begin the process of sharing an AirTag, there are a few basic prerequisites for both you and the person you’re sharing with:

  • Enable two-factor authentication: Make sure two-factor authentication is turned on for your Apple ID. This adds an extra layer of security to your account and is required for sharing AirTags.
  • Log in to iCloud: All participants must be signed in to their iCloud accounts on their devices. This enables seamless syncing and sharing of AirTag information.
  • Enable iCloud Keychain: iCloud Keychain must be turned on for all participants. This feature securely stores and syncs passwords and other sensitive information across devices, ensuring secure sharing.

Once you complete these prerequisites, you’ll be ready to share AirTags with others.

Air tag sharing

To share an AirTag with another person, follow the step-by-step instructions below:

1. Open the Find My app: Launch the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
2. Go to the Items tab: Go to the Items tab in the app where your AirTags are located.
3. Select AirTag: Select the specific AirTag you want to share from the list of available AirTags.
4. Add person: Drag the handle at the bottom of the screen and tap “Add Person.”
5. Select contact: Select a contact from the suggested list of people or manually enter the contact name or email address.
6. Send an invitation: Press the “Share” button to send an AirTag sharing invitation to the selected contact.

After completing these steps, the invitation will be sent to the recipient, who will be able to accept the invitation and start sharing the AirTag.

Accept the invitation

If you receive an invitation to share an AirTag, follow these steps to accept the invitation and start tracking your shared item:

1. Open the Find My app: Launch the Find My app on your device.
2. Go to the Items tab: Go to the Items tab in the app, where your shared items are located.
3. Find the invitation: Look for the AirTag sharing invitation in the list of items.
4. Add AirTag: Tap the “Add” button next to the invitation and confirm your action by tapping “Add” again.
5. Follow AirTag: The shared AirTag will now appear in the map view, allowing you to track its location.

Once you accept the invite, you’ll be able to see the location of the shared AirTag and be notified if it’s found or missing.

Stop sharing

If you want to stop sharing your AirTag with someone, follow these steps:

1. Open the Find My app: Launch the Find My app on your device.
2. Go to the Items tab: Go to the Items tab in the app where your AirTags are located.
3. Select a shared AirTag: Select the AirTag you want to stop sharing from the list.
4. Delete contact: Drag the handle at the bottom of the screen and touch the name of the contact you want to remove.
5. Confirm deletion: Tap the “Delete” button, then confirm your action by tapping “Stop Sharing.”

After completing these steps, the selected contact will no longer have access to the shared AirTag and it will be removed from the Find My app.
