The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Development Office (GBA Office) Constitution and Mainland Offices and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) today (June 14) co-hosted the GoGBA seminar for the accounting sector, which kicks off the “GoGBA Sector Series”. The seminar, whose strategic partner was the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Hong Kong, focused on the development of the accounting profession in Hong Kong in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

In her opening speech at the event, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Development Commissioner Maisie Chan said: “Under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle, Hong Kong enjoys significant advantages such as free movement of capital, common law system, low and a simple tax system and a regulatory system tailored to the international market With a world-class business environment and renowned professional services sector, Hong Kong is best placed to serve as a “super connector”. “and “super added value” between the continental market and the global market.”

Ms Chan added that the accounting profession and accountants in Hong Kong are at the forefront of the world in terms of professionalism and regulatory standards, and are an important force in supporting the high-quality development of various sectors in Hong Kong and the GBA as a whole. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will continue to maintain close cooperation with the mainland authorities to pursue more policy innovations and breakthroughs, as well as compliance and alignment of policies and mechanisms, to facilitate the smooth flow of financial factors in the region, and better leverage Hong Kong’s advantages as an international financial center. This will further increase the demand for professional accounting services in the GBA and significantly expand the opportunities for development of the accounting profession.

At today’s seminar, representatives of the Nansha District People’s Government in Guangzhou and the Qianhai Government in Shenzhen were also invited to present the latest preferential policies and tax incentives in Nansha and Qianhai, the two main cooperation platforms in the GBA. Many accountants also shared strategies and practices of Hong Kong professional accounting services in growing their business in GBA, helping participants better understand and capture the growth opportunities presented by GBA’s development.

The new “GoGBA Sector Series” is a joint initiative of the GBA Office and HKTDC, which aims to focus on the needs of different sectors and provide more detailed and targeted information and support to enterprises and professionals in relevant sectors through more diversified means, and support them in growing their businesses in various GBA cities. In addition to keynote speeches and panel discussions, the seminar also featured small group advisory workshops and one-on-one consultation services, where experts answered questions and offered advice on the development of the accounting sector in GBA mainland cities. The next event in the accounting sector series, “GoGBA Accounting Sector Study Tour”, will take place at the end of July. Meetings will be organized to enable participants to visit GBA cities on the continent to learn about the latest developments and policy measures applicable to the accounting sector on the continent, while at the same time building their business network and opening up to new markets.

Hong Kong customs confiscates $5.77 million worth of suspicious goods at Lok Ma Chau checkpoint and arrests driver for undeclared cargo violation

Yesterday (June 14), Hong Kong Customs authorities conducted an anti-smuggling operation at Lok Ma Chau Checkpoint and detected suspected smuggling involving a cross-border cargo vehicle. A batch of suspicious goods with an estimated market value of approximately $5.77 million was seized.

Following a risk assessment, customs officers yesterday intercepted an outgoing cargo vehicle at the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint, reported as carrying metallic paste, resistance paste, ceramic powder for electronics and a ball capacitor. During the inspection, it was found that the amount of cargo in the cargo area of ​​the truck did not correspond to the quantity declared in the export manifest, and a batch of suspicious unmanifested cargoes, including approximately 1,050 kg of electronic bonding materials, approximately 198 kg of electronic conductive materials, approximately 92 kg of resistive paste, approximately 800 kg of ceramic powder for electronics and approximately 1,764 kg of ball capacitor.

The 69-year-old driver was arrested and released on bail pending further investigation.

Customs will continue to combat cross-border smuggling with aggressive enforcement actions based on risk assessment and intelligence analysis.

Smuggling is a serious crime. Under the Import and Export Regulation, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for up to seven years.
