Recent research offers encouraging news for people at risk of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes: evening physical activity can significantly improve glucose regulation, especially in overweight and obese people.

A study published in the journal Obesity shows that performing moderate to vigorous physical activity between 6 p.m. and midnight has a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism in both overweight and obese men and women. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Granada (UGR) in Spain highlights the potential of timed exercise to maximize health benefits.

Study insights

The study included 186 overweight or obese adults with an average age of 47 and an equal gender distribution. Participants wore accelerometers and continuous glucose monitors for 14 days to monitor their physical activity and glucose levels around the clock.

Key conclusions

The findings show that evening exercise improves glucose regulation in people with impaired glucose metabolism, such as those with elevated fasting glucose levels or insulin resistance. This effect was observed in both men and women, highlighting the universal benefit of evening physical activity in glucose control.

The importance of time

The study highlights the importance of time in physical activity recommendations. “Choosing the ideal time of day appears to be an emerging strategy to enhance the benefits of physical activity on glucose metabolism, especially in people with insulin resistance or at risk for type 2 diabetes,” the researchers note.

Before this study, it was unclear whether exercising at specific times of the day could optimize cardio-metabolic outcomes. New findings suggest that evening exercise may be particularly effective at improving glucose regulation, providing a simple but effective strategy for people looking to better manage their diabetes risk.

This study provides valuable information to both healthcare professionals and individuals, indicating that exercise timing may play a key role in managing and improving glucose metabolism. For overweight and obese adults at risk for type 2 diabetes, incorporating evening physical activity into their daily routine may be a key step toward improving health.
