The government’s goal is to control the ever-increasing levels of pollution in the country. To achieve this goal, the government has introduced a scrapping policy under which private vehicles older than 20 years and commercial vehicles older than 15 years will have to undergo automatic fitness tests. Government vehicles and PSUs older than 15 years will also have to be tested.

Old vehicles have been found to generate 10 to 12 times more pollution compared to a new vehicle. By implementing this policy, the government will be able to remove unusable cars from the roads, directly solving the pollution problem. Automatic fitness tests are expected to start from April 1, 2023 for heavy vehicles, while for others they will start from June 1, 2024 and in a phased manner. However, this policy does not apply to vintage cars, so collectors can not worry about their vintage collection.

What are the benefits?

People who scrap their vehicle before purchasing a new one will receive a 5% discount on a new car. Once the car is successfully registered for scrapping, a scrapping certificate will be made available so that the car buyer can benefit from the incentive. State governments have also been advised to provide 25% road tax concession on private vehicles and 15% on commercial vehicles as an additional benefit.

With the policy in its initial stages of development, more benefits and incentives are expected to be introduced to encourage people to scrap old cars.
