Apple’s iPhone design goal is to create the thinnest and lightest iPhone, a report claims

The latest iPad Pro is the thinnest product Apple has ever produced, thinner than the iPod nano. A new report suggests that the shift to thinner gadgets will extend to other products, including the iPhone – though likely not until next year.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, the new iPad Pro set a precedent. Gurman says: “Apple’s new iPad Pro sets the stage for thinner iPhones and other devices. “It seemed like over the last few years, Apple was moving away from making devices as thin and light as possible.”

Gurman says the new iPad Pro, released in April, “marked a return to form.” The new device delivered something much thinner without compromising battery life, and it appears to be a template for Apple’s future product range. Gurman believes that in addition to the iPhone, this will result in thinner laptops and watches.

Well, these products are getting thicker, like the Apple Watch Ultra and the latest MacBook Pro models, and part of that is bigger batteries.

But now that Apple has proven it can do it with the iPad Pro, it will do it on other devices as well. Gurman says: “The plan is that the latest iPad Pro will be the beginning of a new class of Apple devices that should be the thinnest and lightest products in their categories in the entire technology industry.”

In other words, Apple’s success with the slim iPad Pro means that “Apple has figured out how to make its devices even thinner while adding important new features.”

It’s true: the reason the latest iPad Pro has the same 10-hour battery life as the original iPad and the Apple tablets in between is because Apple has made it a priority. And that’s quite an achievement when new features are added that draw more power.

But you’ll have to be patient: this super-slim design isn’t available yet. “I’m told that Apple is currently focused on developing a much thinner phone that will fit into the iPhone 17 line in 2025.” – says Gurman, although he does not provide the release date of the thinner Apple Watch and MacBook Pro.

The question remains: Would you like a thinner iPhone with the same battery life as you currently have, or would you, as I suspect many, be happy with a device that’s the same thickness as today but with longer battery life?
