Nigeria’s gas sector: FG attracts Canadian investors

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo

The federal government has urged Canadian companies and investors to explore opportunities in the Nigerian gas sector.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, made the call during a reception hosted by the Nigerian High Commission in Alberta in Calgary, Canada, where he is attending the ongoing Global Energy Show.

Ekpo said the path to a sustainable energy future requires partnership, innovation and a shared commitment to address global energy challenges. He described the Global Energy Show as a platform where the brightest minds and most influential leaders in the energy sector come together, saying the gathering provides an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s enormous potential in the global energy landscape, especially in the gas sector.

“We invite Canadian companies and investors to explore Nigeria’s enormous opportunities. Our government is committed to ensuring a stable and enabling environment for investment, focusing on transparency, efficiency and mutual benefits,” Ekpo said.

The Minister of Gas said Nigeria has some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world and is committed to using these resources not only as a catalyst for economic growth, but also as an important element of its energy transformation strategy.

According to Ekpo, over the past few years, the Nigerian government has made significant progress in creating an enabling environment for investment in the gas sector.

He said initiatives such as the Decade of Gas have been launched to transform Nigeria into a gas-based economy by 2030. He also said the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 has established the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund Fund (MDGIF), which provides a strategic framework aimed at removing bottlenecks, encouraging investment and creating an enabling environment for the development of gas infrastructure.

Ekpo, therefore, urged private sector investors to see Nigeria as their chosen destination, stressing their importance in the pursuit of energy security and sustainable development of the country.
