Information and broadcasting | Regulatory dilemma

UPDATED: June 17, 2024, 04:28 CEST

TThe primary objective of the I&B ministry is to disseminate information about government policies, plans and programs through various media. However, in recent years, the ministry itself has been in the news for its attempts to “control” information. Another major concern is the proposed Broadcasting Services Regulation (BSR) Act, 2023, which, once in force, will replace the current Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. It consolidates the legal framework for the broadcasting sector and extends it to OTT content, digital news and current affairs. Experts fear this will be a powerful tool for the government to censor news. The ministry must address this issue.
