Samsung Electronics will develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and educate AI experts in cooperation with Seoul National University, with a special focus on strengthening artificial intelligence research in Galaxy mobile devices, the company said on Monday.

Samsung said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University on Monday to establish a joint artificial intelligence research center.

Under the agreement, researchers from Samsung’s device experience division will work with students from Seoul National University’s College of Engineering on industry and academia research projects related to the latest artificial intelligence technologies for the next three years, the company said.

In particular, both sides will seek to secure on-device AI technology, which enables the device to perform AI functions even when it is not connected, and multi-modal AI, a technology that processes various types of data such as text, images, voice and video together.

Samsung has implemented various AI technologies such as Circle to Search, Real-time Translation and Photo Assist in its latest flagship Galaxy S24 series smartphone, and is also expanding its product offering with AI features such as home appliances equipped with artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence televisions.

As of the second semester of 2020, Seoul National University also runs an interdisciplinary artificial intelligence program at its engineering school, which aims to educate specialists in the field of artificial intelligence.

Samsung expects that through industry and academia cooperation with Seoul National University, it will be able to secure core technologies for the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector and strengthen its technological competitiveness. The company also plans to conduct recruitment activities aimed at outstanding master’s and doctoral students of universities who will join a research project aimed at recruiting more AI specialists.

“Through the agreement to establish a joint artificial intelligence research center with Seoul National University, we expect Samsung Electronics to strengthen its technological and product competitiveness in the artificial intelligence sector and contribute to providing outstanding specialists in future areas of artificial intelligence research,” Cheun said Kyung-whoon, chief technology officer of Samsung Electronics’ Device Operations Division and head of Samsung Research.
