Nationalists propose rent control in Wales

Rhun ap Iorwerth – Plaid Cymru

Nationalist party Tartan Cymru would introduce rent control in Wales if Wales gained power, which would anger landlords and letting agents.

Party manifesto ahead of the general election states that action must be taken to ensure local people are not priced out of the rental market.

Fair rent system

“Our proposed Right to Adequate Housing in Wales Bill would include powers to introduce rent controls,” the manifesto reads.

“In the private rental sector, we believe in a system of fair rents and rent control, so that they are affordable for local people on local incomes, and that prices for individuals and families are not set based on the area in which they currently live.”

The current Welsh Housing Minister, Julie James, who is a Labor MP, must end any prospect of rent control in Wales, – the letting agents insisted when she was reappointed to the position in March.

Propertymark has expressed strong opposition to Labour’s proposed rent freeze or cap, introduced in Scotland by the SNP.

He reacted angrily

And landlords reacted angrily to last year’s proposed rent freeze or cap in Wales, warning it could “decimate” the rental sector.

The Welsh Government’s Green Paper suggests that limiting rent increases could help tenants facing a severe cost of living crisis.
