Apple supplier TDK is developing next-generation battery material for mobile devices

Tokyo-based electronic parts maker TDK (OTCPK:TTDKY) (OTCPK:TTDKF) said it has developed material for a next-generation solid-state battery for wearable devices.

The Japanese company that is Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) the supplier noted that it had developed a material for CeraCharge, the next generation a solid-state battery with an energy density of 1,000 watt-hours per liter, or Wh/l, which is approximately 100 times greater than the energy density of a conventional solid-state battery.

The technology is aimed at a solution that can be applied to wearable devices such as wireless earbuds, hearing aids and even smartwatches, the company added.

TDK noted that the technology aims to replace existing coin-cell batteries in line with EU battery regulations that require their replacement with rechargeable batteries. These batteries are expected to help reduce environmental impact.

The use of a solid oxide-based electrolyte makes the batteries extremely safe. According to the company, it is intended for use in wearable devices and other devices that come into direct contact with the human body.
