Expert says Taylor Swift fans face serious risk amid Ticketmaster lawsuit over Eras Tour debacle

Attendees at live music events have been warned about the potential financial consequences of the Ticketmaster lawsuit.

Recently, the United States Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster. The lawsuit says two leading live events organizations merged in 2010, jointly overseeing about 80% of major concert venues.

Last month, US Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a bold statement calling for the separation of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Upon learning of the Department of Justice’s efforts to dismantle Ticketmaster’s reported monopoly in the industry, attorney Jeffrey B. Simon shared his thoughts on the consequences for consumers with The US Sun.

Simon opposes the claim that the coexistence of monopolies and capitalism is contradictory, emphasizing the need to introduce antitrust regulations to ensure fair competition in the market. He told the website: “Leaving aside the merits of the case at hand, there is no doubt that concert tickets have become far too expensive.”

“Gone are the days when musical art of the most renowned quality could be heard and seen at an affordable price in terms of American wages and working hours.”

In response to the overwhelming response from Taylor Swift’s loyal fans, Ticketmaster has been forced to suspend general ticket sales for the singer’s highly anticipated The Eras Tour due to technical issues caused by unprecedented demand. This issue highlights the challenges presented by the company’s dominant position in the live events industry.

Swift even said at the time, “It was excruciating for me to watch mistakes happen, with no way out.”

“What really infuriated me was that many of them felt like they had gone through several bear attacks to get (tickets).”

After a long wait of up to eight hours, some Swifties were disappointed to discover that tickets had sold out.

Ticket prices for Swift’s performances ranged from $49 to $449, which Simon and the Department of Justice are closely examining.

According to Simon, the verdict in the upcoming trial will significantly impact the future ticket purchasing experience for popular live events, potentially strengthening Ticketmaster’s market dominance. Rising ticket costs combined with exorbitant resale fees have already burdened fans, leaving Simon concerned that ticket prices could rise further.

The potential impact of legal action on soaring ticket prices depends on the Department of Justice’s ability to demonstrate Ticketmaster’s business strategy as an illegal monopoly and the need to dismantle the company’s alleged dominance in the live music sector, according to the expert.

“If the Department of Justice is successful, the resale ticket market should become more competitive and thus lower ticket prices, at least for some meetings,” Simon explained to the outlet.

“If the Department of Justice collapses, Ticketmaster will appear bulletproof and likely become more dominant. In turn, the market is likely to become less competitive and ticket prices will remain status quo or increase.”

In addition to highlighting the financial implications for consumers, Simon also highlighted the potential stress reduction resulting from a ticket purchasing lawsuit.

Stating that the existing process, with its timers and virtual queues, can lead to high levels of anxiety and dissatisfaction with the purchasing process, Simon stressed the need to carefully evaluate the ticketing method.

He further raised the issue of monopolistic influence in the ticketing sector, suggesting that addressing this issue could be beneficial.

He made a valuable recommendation by proposing the implementation of fairer queuing processes that provide transparent information about customer placement in the queue and expected waiting times. Simon also stressed the importance of re-examining pre-sale practices, which often limit the availability of tickets to the general public.

Simon said these methods need to be re-evaluated to strike a harmonious balance between recognizing dedicated fans and ensuring a level playing field for all.
