Cembureau Establishes New Industrial Agreement for Clean Energy

Europe: Progress on the Green Deal and the establishment of a New Industrial Deal will safeguard Europe’s prosperity, according to a joint statement by Cefic, Cembureau, Eurofer, Eurometaux and WindEurope. Organizations say energy-intensive industries in Europe, such as cement and steel, are key to the wind energy supply chain.

However, current policy lacks a framework that would effectively support those industries that have experienced production cuts as a result of the energy crisis. Meeting these challenges is essential for the New Industrial Deal for Europe, which aims to support the use of renewable energy to reduce energy costs. According to the International Energy Agency, the development of photovoltaics and wind power from 2021 to 2023 helped keep electricity prices lower than they otherwise would have been. Combining the EU Green Deal with an industrial agreement is seen as a strategy to ensure regulatory stability, encourage investment in decarbonization and increase competitiveness.

Koen Coppenholle, CEO of Cembureau, said: “Cement is a key element in the construction of wind turbine foundations and their recycling, while the development of renewable energy is essential to achieving the ambitions of the net-zero cement sector. We look forward to working well with the wind sector to support a strong EU industrial policy and help build the business case for investment in decarbonization,” Coppenholle said.
