The US Federal Communications Commission On Thursday, I voted in favor of restoring consumer and business protection on the open internet, the so-called net neutrality.

Net neutrality first came into force in 2015 under the Obama administration. The idea is that ISPs should treat all traffic equally and not throttle or block specific traffic for any reason. That was then quickly killed by the FCC under former President Trump two years later.

Thursday’s vote split along party lines, with three Democratic commissioners voting in favor of reopening the trial and two Republican commissioners voting against it.

“Today we begin the process to correct this problem,” FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a press release Thursday. “We propose restoring enforceable clear rules to prevent blocking, throttling and paid prioritization. They would ensure that the Internet remains open and a haven for creating without permission, building communities beyond geography, and organizing without physical limits.”

Rosenworcel confirmed the news of her intention restore net neutrality last month. That came later Commissioner Anna Gomez was confirmed by the Senate.

The next step for the FCC will be a public comment period on the net neutrality proposal. If adopted after review, the FCC would then implement internet security measures.
