The Asus SmartO Mouse MD200 lasts for a year on a single AA battery, works on glass surfaces, has a DPI change button and can jump between three devices with the press of a button. This mouse meets all the requirements and is also reliable. Here is our extensive review.

New Delhi: The Asus MD200 is a large mouse, and I like large mice because it provides a more comfortable and versatile grip for long periods of use. The MD200 can be gripped with claws or hands, but can also be used with fingertips only. This mouse is like the bigger brother of the MD100, with similar aesthetics and colors. Let’s dig into it.

Build and design

Like most Asus mice, this one is not ambidextrous. If you’re left-handed, you may want to consider the WT300 mouse, which has most of the same features. The mouse has an ergonomic shape that fits comfortably in the hand, with a slight recess for the thumb. The mouse is tilted down to the right.

The case flows seamlessly into the buttons on the front, and the silver scroll wheel is ribbed for precise control. There is a button under the scroll wheel that allows you to quickly change the sensitivity, which is useful when gaming. This is a mouse that allows you to go from normal work to video games with literally one press of a button.

At the front of the device there is a rather unique elastic band with which you can move the device, which is useful when moving it, for example, from a desk to a conference room. One finger is enough to carry the MD200. The band is quite sturdy and we found that it actually retracts a bit when tugged repeatedly.

The base of the unit has low-friction pads along the front and bottom edges, with small circular spots on the sides. These pads ensure that the mouse glides smoothly across the surface it is placed on and can be easily used on a desk without a pad. In fact, it can also be used on glass surfaces.

The base of the device slides back to reveal space for a single AA battery and a dock for a dongle that isn’t really needed. A button at the bottom switches between Bluetooth and wireless modes, with an off setting in the middle. There’s another button at the top with three little indicators that’s extremely useful. This button allows users to switch between three simultaneously connected computers.

There is a pair of customizable buttons on the side. The switches are designed to last and last over 10 million clicks. We know from experience that Asus mice are durable. MD200 also has an Asus antibacterial cover that inhibits the growth of bacteria on the surface. All things considered, it is a solid and reliable device.

Efficiency

The MD200 allows you to quickly switch between up to three connected machines. This switching works like a charm every time, and after a while you don’t even have to look at the bottom of the mouse and pointers to switch between devices. We found this to be the most useful feature of the mouse.

In terms of battery life, the MD200 can run for a whole year on a single AA battery. We found the Asus mouse’s battery life to be incredibly long, so we have no trouble believing these claims even though we only used the device for a few weeks. There were absolutely no connectivity issues during this entire time.

Asus software once again helps you get the most out of your device, and Armory Crate gives you all the tools you need to customize your mouse to suit your needs. The sensor is a high-end 4200 DPI sensor that tracks accurately. The mouse can be used from a distance of up to 10 meters. Tracking is done using an optical sensor that works perfectly on glass surfaces.

In terms of gaming, this is not a gaming mouse, but you can use it for gaming. The only drawback is that the mouse is larger and may be a bit too heavy (85 grams) for everyone’s comfort, especially during long and demanding gaming sessions. However, the DPS switching works like a charm and reliably every time.

Verdict

The listed price of the mouse is Rs 4,499, but Asus is offering a discount of Rs 2,000, which means the MD200 can be purchased for Rs 2,499. If your budget can be stretched a bit and you’re looking for a mouse specifically for gaming, then the Razer Deathadder V2 X HyperSpeed will be a great option to consider. Those looking for an ambidextrous mouse may consider the Logitech G304, which is, however, heavier than the MD200.

There are other Asus mice in the same price range, including the MW203-BK that we use ourselves, which is smaller and, at least for us, more comfortable. The WT300 is Asus’ ambidextrous option, and the MD100 is much smaller. However, all things considered, the MD200 is a solid, reliable and long-lasting proposition that performs great in a variety of circumstances. Especially for office work with multiple devices, the MD200 is an easy recommendation.
