At Burnaby’s Commission for Recreation and Culture in Parks (PRCC) on June 11, Rebecca Thandi, PRC’s director of strategic initiatives for city relations, updated the committee on progress on Burnaby’s strategy for outdoor aquatic services and facilities.

Thandi said the strategy, which will govern the construction and operation of outdoor water facilities, will be completed by the end of 2024. She added that the city authorities are currently in the middle of creating a new strategy.

“All four of the city’s outdoor pools were built in the 1960s, and more than half of these pool systems have reached the end of their life,” Thandi said.

Thandi also updated the committee on the results of the city’s community engagement efforts. More than 800 people took part in a social engagement survey published on the city’s Your Voice platform, where popular requests included extended working hours and a longer season at outdoor swimming pools.

The parkway is alive: Burnaby has big plans for the BC Parkway corridor

If you live in the Metrotown area, you’ve probably noticed the colorful benches and picnic tables that recently appeared near the SkyTrain station almost overnight.

Now that it’s sunny and pleasant outside, you can see groups, couples, singles and families eating meals, socializing and enjoying the late spring sunshine. Sometimes people play foosball and table tennis on tables set up around the city. From time to time, food trucks park nearby, which expands the food and snack offerings in the area.

New additions to Burnaby’s section of BC Parkway are part of the city’s latest project, The parkway is alivewhose goal is to transform the unused area under the SkyTrain line into a linear park with all the amenities of a regular park.

Where to eat and drink

🍕 Trattoria Burnaby. This charming Italian restaurant near the Metrotown Shopping Center is a real gem, serving classics like prosciutto pizza, spaghetti carbonara, and simple appetizers like burrata and focaccia. A definite highlight of the menu is their signature pasta plate – for $67 you get a choice of truffle spaghetti and meatballs, crispy gnocchi, rigatoni bolognese and linguine gamberi.

🥞 Angelina’s Dutch Corner. There’s probably no better place for brunch in New West than Angelina’s Dutch Corner, which specializes in fluffy pannekoeken (aka Dutch pancakes or Dutch babies). Get yours sweet or savory, or better yet, buy one of each and share it with friends so you can try them all.

🧆 Metropolis of Basha. Who doesn’t like a good snack at the mall? It certainly does, especially when it comes in the form of a juicy chicken shawarma (with plenty of hummus, of course, and finished with a heavy brick of baklava). Get all this and more at this Metrotown health food stand for the perfect lunch in the middle of the store.
