Samplebrain: A free sample mashing app by Aphex Twin

(Original post by Robin Molten, September 26, 2022) The idea is that you have a target sample that you want to play with. Samplebrain chops it up and tries to match it with blocks of other samples stored in its “brain”. So it is something related to the interpretation of one sound through a network of similarities.

As development progressed throughout 2015 and 2016, more and more parameters were added to the point that it is mostly a fest of glitches and chaotic noise. Although it depends on your proficiency in selecting samples and capturing the effect of things.

Dave explains this idea on his website thenTryThis.org:

Below is a schematic sketch from when we were planning how this should work, showing portions of the waveforms being matched to the target on the right. We planned to do more visualizations like this, but as we focused on the real-time aspects, listening became the key to understanding how it worked.

Fortunately, there is a demo session you can download (separately) that at least confirms that the noise-laden choke of the samples you’re hearing is correct and you’re not doing it wrong with your own samples.

Samplebrain is a fascinating way to generate interesting results from samples you already have. It’s eco-friendly and creative to the point of becoming an obsession. It’s available for macOS, Linux, and Windows and you should probably try it out.
