SUDBURY, ONTARIO (CTV Network) – There were tense moments in northern Ontario after several World War II-era explosives were found earlier this week.

Three live mortar rounds were found Monday by a woman in Schreiber, Ont., who was cleaning out her garage after her husband’s death, Ontario Provincial Police Officer Tanya Brennen told CTV News Northern Ontario by phone Thursday morning.

After the discovery, she called the police, and it took several days to get teams together.

Several streets were closed, trains were closed and several blocks were evacuated Wednesday afternoon as officers responded to a home in the 200 block of Ontario Street, Brennen said.

“The area was evacuated and the team moved the devices to a safe location for controlled destruction,” the OPP said.

Assistance was also provided by the Nipigon Detachment, the Schreiber and Terrace Bay Fire Departments, the Northwest Regional Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, the 17 Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and the Department of National Defense in Winnipeg.

Brennen said police were not sure where exactly the “mortar rounds” came from or whether the woman’s deceased husband was in the military.

She confirmed that no one was injured in the incident and no charges were filed.
