Genesco (GCO) Reports Second Quarter Loss, Skip Revenue Estimates

Genesco (GCO) came out with a quarterly loss of $1.23 per share compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $1.26. For comparison, a year earlier earnings per share were $0.15. These numbers have been adjusted for one-off items.

This quarterly report presented an earnings surprise of 2.38%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this retailer of shoes, hats, clothing and accessories would post a loss of $1.78 per share when it actually produced a loss of $3.65, delivering a surprise of -105.06%.

The company has topped consensus EPS estimates three times over the last four quarters.

Genesco, which belongs to the Zacks Retail – Apparel & Footwear industry, posted revenues of $391.22 million for the quarter ended July 2020, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.37%. For comparison, revenues from a year ago amounted to $486.57 million. The company has failed to beat consensus revenue estimates over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the immediate share price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management’s commentary on the earnings call.

Genesco shares have lost approximately 54.4% since the beginning of the year compared to the S&P 500’s gain of 10.8%.
