Which means the longest day of the year for solar energy

This is the highest time of the year to use solar energy.

The sun is expected to account for 20 percent of global electricity production when it peaks on Friday – the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere – according to a report by Ember, a clean energy consulting firm. This is 4 percent more than last year.

The longest day of the year brings an annual high level of solar energy production. It represents a snapshot in time, as solar power generation will slowly fade away as the days gradually shorten until the winter solstice in December. Nevertheless, Ember’s findings underscore the industry’s rapid growth. Ember found that global solar energy production increased from about 130 terawatt-hours in 2013 to 1,630 TWh in 2021.

The industry has a chance to develop further in the coming years. The International Energy Agency recently estimated that the $500 billion expected to be invested globally in solar power this year will dwarf combined spending on all other forms of energy generation.
