How Oloriegbe is pushing for health insurance for Nigerians

The Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) yesterday asked the Federal Government to strengthen the healthcare sectors in the country.

This comes from the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, who is pushing for health insurance for all Nigerians.

Addressing participants in the Strategic Stakeholder Meeting on the Draft National Policy on Health Services Industry Incentives and Investment in Health Care, championed by the Health Care Federation of Nigeria (HFN) in Lagos, Oloriegbe said there was a need to provide health care both in public and private hospitals available to all residents.

In an interactive session with private doctors, the representative of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of Nigeria (PMG-MAN), Uzoma Ezeoke, pleaded with the government to abolish customs duties on imported pharmaceutical products over brain drain in the health sector, the senator said:

“The government is doing everything it can to improve the working environment by increasing pay, and we cannot simply increase the pay of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others working in the health sector.”

For her part, HFN Chairperson, Dr. Pamela Ajayi, insisted that the government should fund the health sector, leaving aside greater inclusion of private health workers in government policies and programs.
