SHENZHEN, June 21 (Xinhua) — Chinese tech giant Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system, a rival to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, has built a vibrant ecosystem of more than 900 million devices, the company said on Friday.

Yu Chengdong, Huawei executive, made the announcement at the company’s annual developer conference held in Dongguan city in southern China’s Guangdong province.

According to Yu, a total of 2.54 million developers have joined in building the HarmonyOS ecosystem. There are over 1,500 apps available, he said.

HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an open-source operating system designed for a variety of devices and scenarios, including smart displays, tablets, wearables, and cars. It was first launched in August 2019.

Yu said China-developed HarmonyOS, which has evolved to its fourth version, has redefined the bipolar landscape of mobile operating systems, providing the world with an independent and reliable new option.

“HarmonyOS boasts multitasking because it allows an application to go through a single development stage to be adapted to different platforms, which reduces costs for developers,” Zhang Ning, director of ecology at WPS Office, a software suite similar to Microsoft Office.
