Car Insurance Charges Electric Vehicles With Solar Energy – NBC Los Angeles

Solar company GoSun has launched a foldable car cover that harnesses the sun’s energy to increase miles of range for electric vehicle drivers.

The sunshade, which can charge electric vehicles (EVs) with solar energy, is said to be capable of providing approximately 50 miles of energy.

GoSun is now known for its smaller-scale solar-powered products, such as solar-powered coolers that can keep drinks cold for longer. Now the company plans to expand its operations and charge electric vehicles.

The electric vehicle solar charger folds into a case placed on the user’s car while driving, and then unfolds over the car when parked.

According to the GoSun website, the charger works by converting sunlight into Level 1 AC current, which is then transmitted to the vehicle via the charging cable.

GoSun CEO Patrick Sherwin says the charger can generate about 1,200 watts of power, enough for most people’s daily commute. Sherwin also notes that the charger can be used to connect devices in the event of a power outage or while camping.

“There’s 200 watts of power on top that constantly charges a small buffer battery attached to the system,” Sherwin said. “So even when you’re driving, you’re still charging.”

Sold for $3,000 each and after just three weeks on the market, the company’s pre-order sales have already reached nearly $1 million.

GoSun is expected to make a solar-powered car cover available to the public by 2025
