Woman from Minnesota she received a box filled with balloons for children from Amazon. Family in Illinois he had dozens of boxes from Temu delivered to your door, including military hats and cameras. And like many other people across the United States who received an unexpected delivery of seemingly random goods, none of them ordered the products.

Consumer protection experts say an unsolicited e-commerce order could indicate so-called brushing fraud, a technique used by some unscrupulous online sellers to generate fake reviews of their products. The perpetrator is typically a third-party seller on a large e-commerce platform who wants to become a verified seller, which allows the seller to write product reviews on someone else’s behalf.

According to the Better Business Bureau, scams often involve a foreign company obtaining an address found online and then delivering the products to your home. Josh Planos, a BBB spokesman, advises consumers receiving unwanted products to document the incidents and contact retailers directly to have shipments stopped.

“They intend to give the impression that you have written a glowing review of their merchandise online and that you are a verified purchaser of that merchandise,” the BBB said in the warning. “Then they post a fake positive review to boost their product ratings, which means more sales. From their point of view, it is very profitable.”

If you received an unwanted package from Amazon, Tego or another seller, here are the steps the BBB recommends to protect your personal information.

  • Notify the seller and ask them to investigate any fraudulent purchases
  • Try contacting the sender and asking them to remove any fake reviews written in your name
  • Check your e-commerce accounts for recent orders
  • Consider sending future packages to another location
  • Change your online account passwords
  • Monitor your credit reports and credit card statements
