Fireworks Tent Regulations in Southwest Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. — We’re two weeks away from the Fourth of July and you’ve probably seen tents set up all over town for fireworks sales. But have you ever wondered what it takes to drive one?

A symbol of celebration that will soon be sold in tents on almost every street corner in southwest Missouri. So we caught up with Joplin Fire Marshal Dale Brooks about what it takes to run one.

“I think anyone could do that, but you still have to go through the process – we take those applications, we review the sites, and we make sure the site will be appropriate and compliant with the regulations that have been adopted,” said Dale Brooks, Joplin Fire Marshal.

It turns out locals had until June 1 to register for an occupancy permit and a tent permit, which cost about $100 to obtain and are absolutely necessary to operate a legal fireworks stand. Stand operators must also be able to provide customers with evidence of a deposit or liability insurance.

“I think we currently have 14 locations that want to sell fireworks, so we’ll look at Sunday the 30th and try to get them ready for sales so they can start selling at midnight on the 30th if they want,” Brooksa said.

Brooks also wants to remind residents what products are and are not acceptable.

“No pop bottle rockets and, um, no lanterns allowed within city limits,” Brooks said.

Fireworks will be allowed to be sold starting July 1 in the Joplin area.
