How to Connect Your Roku Device to Wi-Fi Without a Remote

The first and easiest step is to check if your Roku device has an Ethernet port. If so, connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable and simply use the remote control feature in the Roku app on your phone to manage the device. Another alternative is to buy a universal remote and use it with your Roku. If your Roku device doesn’t have an Ethernet port and you don’t have a universal remote, follow the steps below. You will need two other phones or tablets.

  1. On your first device, turn on mobile hotspot. Here’s how to do it on Android, and here’s how to turn your iPhone into a hotspot.

  2. Make sure your mobile hotspot network has the same SSID name and password as the network your Roku device was last connected to. This step is crucial and if you don’t have this information, it won’t work. We want to trick the Roku device into thinking it’s connecting to the old network, and for that we need information about the old network.

  3. On the second device that doesn’t have hotspot turned on, download the Roku app.

  4. Reset your Roku by unplugging it and then plugging it back in after a few minutes. This should cause the Roku to automatically reconnect to the mobile hotspot, making it think it’s using the old Wi-Fi network.

  5. On the other device, use the Remote tab in the Roku app to update your network settings to your regular Wi-Fi network.
