Climate change is wreaking havoc on the state’s agricultural sector: P. Prasad

The government will open a sales center to promote and promote agricultural produce and value-added products produced by farmers of Onattukara region, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad said.

On Saturday, he led the state-level inauguration of ‘Njattuvela market’ and ‘Karshaka sabhas’ (farmers’ gatherings) at the TA convention center in Kayamkulam.

Mr Prasad said climate change was wreaking havoc on the agriculture sector in the state. “The agricultural sector and farmers in the state bear the brunt of climate change. To revive the agricultural culture in the country, we must use the lessons passed on by previous generations, said the minister.

He said that Thiruvathira Njattuvela is the right time to start cultivating various agricultural produce in central Kerala.

Mr. Prasad inaugurated the tender for Onattukara sesame with GI tag (geographical indication). He congratulated the scientists whose work helped Onattukara Sesame receive the GI label, as well as veteran farmers Jameela at the ceremony.

Onattukara sesame received the GI designation last year. Onattukara Vikasana Agency (OVA), the registered owner of GI Onattukara sesame, headed by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, has already taken steps to promote the GI product and expand its cultivation.

An analysis conducted a few years ago by the Kerala Agricultural University found that oilseeds have additional medicinal value. Compared to other places, sesame grown in the region contains high levels of vitamin E and antioxidants. It also contains oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic acid and so on, which help maintain good health.
