Unionization efforts are increasing in the Dominican Republic’s banana sector

In the Dominican Republic, the SINTRAPBAM workers’ union is leading the effort to organize banana plantation workers. Union leader Crusito Toribio and his team actively promote union membership in the banana growing areas of Montecristi, Mao Valverde and Azua. Through partnerships with local businesses, non-governmental organizations and Haitian churches, SINTRAPBAM aims to advance workers’ rights and interests.

Crusito Toribio has partnered with banana companies and their associations across the country, facilitating contract renewals for 350 Global Banana smallholder farmers. The union’s approach is to work with industry to address ongoing challenges, including declining production.

SINTRAPBAM works closely with Fundacion Etnica Integral and the Social and Cultural Movement for Workers of Haitian Descent (MOSCTHA), using its resources to support migrant workers and their families. Additionally, the Congregation for Pastors of the Haitian Church has played a key role in reaching out to workers of Haitian descent.

The Dominican Government’s Comunidad Segura program supports the union by funding the appointment of two community managers to assist in consolidation efforts. SINTRAPBAM has also initiated training and capacity building programs focusing on women’s empowerment, with more activities planned for the future.
