Apple is rolling out beta updates to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

Apple recently released the second beta of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, following their initial release earlier this month at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

These updates are currently only available to developers, with public betas expected to be released next month.

iPadOS 18 beta 2 introduces significant changes tailored to the European Union market. Notably, it now supports alternative app stores in the EU, as well as allowing alternative payment methods on Apple’s App Store.

Additionally, users will find a new default web browser selection screen, allowing them to select browsers that can leverage engines beyond Safari’s proprietary technology.

These updates are a direct response to the European Commission’s categorization of iPadOS as a “gatekeeper platform”, requiring compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act. Similar solutions were initially integrated into iOS 17.4 earlier this year and are now being extended to iPadOS.

Meanwhile, iOS 18 beta 2 introduced the ability to mirror your iPhone to macOS Sequoia beta 2. This feature allows you to seamlessly control your iPhone from your Mac while ensuring that it’s locked securely. This functionality was a highlight of the WWDC keynote and demonstrated Apple’s commitment to improving device integration and user experience across the ecosystem.

In addition to mirroring, iOS 18 beta 2 introduces support for RCS, a modern messaging standard that offers features such as read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality media sharing. Users will now have the option to enable RCS if their carrier supports the feature, which will improve messaging quality on compatible devices.

As Apple continues to refine the beta based on developer feedback, anticipation grows for the public release expected in the coming weeks. These updates not only reflect Apple’s ongoing efforts to innovate, but also respond to regulatory requirements and user expectations in key global markets.
