In January, Greenspon told the PPF Board of Directors that after more than eight years in the executive position, it was time for new leadership and that he would remain in the position through a search and transition period.

“Under Ed’s leadership, PPF’s reach, impact and impact have transformed,” said Ilse Treurnicht, PPF Chair. “Engagement across the country has increased significantly, policy input has become both more substantive and more accessible, and the focus on tomorrow’s difficult issues has made PPF more relevant to Canada future. Meanwhile, the organization has transformed its business model to ensure continued growth during the global pandemic. This is an extraordinary legacy for which the Management Board and PPF partners are grateful.”

During the transition period, PPF will maintain an ongoing relationship with Greenspon as a PPF member and senior advisor to the CEO. He will remain as CEO for the time being December 31, 2024.

Greenspon joined the organization in 2016 and introduced an enablement-to-proposal methodology, which brings together diverse parties to develop implementable policy solutions, helping to create a unique place for PPF in the Canadian marketplace of ideas. “I love learning and am grateful for the incredible education PPF has provided to this great country that my grandparents chose. I have had the privilege of working with people from different regions and different sectors on the challenges facing the world and their relevance to us at home,” he said.

“I think it’s a good time for new management at PPF and new challenges for me. I don’t think I’ll be particularly talented in retirement, so I plan to focus on what I do best, like writing and problem solving.”

Greenspon joined PPF after an extensive career in Western journalism Canada and at o’clock Globe and mailwhere he was a business journalist, foreign correspondent, Ottawa Office chief, founder and editor of Globeandmail.com and editor-in-chief for seven years. He already knew his new organization well and it honored him with its own Hyman Salomon Award for political journalism in 2002.

As president and CEO, Greenspon led PPF’s activities on a range of topics, including: how the then-new independent Senate would operate; a diagnosis of the deteriorating finances of Canadian news media and what can be done, which led to the creation of charitable tax status for news organizations, the Local Journalism Initiative and the Journalism Work Tax Credit; developing a duty of care approach rather than removing content due to online hate; an approach to the energy transition based on the belief that the very urgency of climate change creates the need to design policies based on shared prosperity, national unity and indigenous sovereignty; and the need for revival Canada life sciences sector after the pandemic to provide residents with better health care and health security. “Of the many important issues, perhaps the most rewarding has been the opportunity to work with Indigenous organizations that are taking real sovereignty over their communities,” Greenspon said.

The PPF Board of Directors appointed and remained on the search committee Griffith and the Company to manage the process.

“We have very big shoes to fill! However, Ed will be leaving a strong organization that is poised to make its mark in the coming years, and we are delighted to continue to benefit from his insights and expertise in PPF’s policy work going forward,” said André Beaulieu, PPF Vice-Chair. “We look forward to properly honoring his many contributions to the PPF community this fall and exploring new projects in collaboration with him.”

Greenspon said he looks forward to helping the new CEO establish himself and introducing him to PPF’s talented team, exceptional management team and hundreds of partners. “Being president of PPF is a privilege; you can work with the best and brightest political minds on the most difficult and consequential issues with only the public and national interest in mind.”
