German dairy giant Ehrmann is expanding its UK footprint with the acquisition of Trewithen Dairy

German dairy giant Ehrmann has acquired Trewithen Dairy, a family-owned dairy processor based in Cornwall, England, as part of the company’s strategy to expand its presence in the UK market.

As part of the deal, Ehrmann will invest £20 million to expand its Trewithen facilities and establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Glynn Valley region of Cornwall.

The new facility is expected to be operational in 2026 and will be responsible for producing Ehrmann’s range of dessert products, such as the High Protein and Grand Dessert lines, which the company estimates will account for 15% of its global sales.

Christian Ehrmann, CEO of Ehrmann SE, said: “Ehrmann has achieved success in the UK over the last two years, working with major supermarket chains to offer consumers new dairy flavors. The acquisition is very significant as it opens up local manufacturing in the UK; enables us to reduce our carbon footprint and guarantee the freshness of our products.”

This move marks the latest chapter in Ehrmann’s more than 100-year history and brings together two family-owned companies committed to producing high-quality, sustainable dairy products.

Trewithen Dairy has been owned by the Clarke family since 1976 and has established itself as Cornwall’s leading processor of branded and proprietary dairy products.

“We are incredibly proud of our roots in high-quality pastures and cows that produce some of the best milk in the world,” said Francis Clarke, owner of Trewithen Dairy. “Quality and sustainability are core values that we deeply share with our new colleagues at Ehrmann. That is why we have decided to join forces to breathe fresh air into the Cornish dairy industry as we enter the next phase of expansion.”

The acquisition will provide jobs for over 260 people currently employed at Trewithen Dairy and is expected to create additional skilled positions in Cornwall’s local economy.

Furthermore, the expansion of the production facility will provide Cornwall with a major, stable buyer of milk, ensuring competitive prices for local dairy farmers.

“We are delighted to be able to expand our offering, create more jobs in the local economy and further bring the joy of high-quality Cornish produce to more taste buds across the UK,” said Paul Berne, CEO of Trewithen Dairy.

Ehrmann, which generates more than €1.1 billion in annual revenues, currently sells its products in more than 75 countries around the world through seven international production facilities and nine sales offices.
