Wissahickon School District featured in an Education Week article on smart device policies

The Wissahickon School District was the subject of a recent article in Education Week about high school smart device policies. From the article:

Jim Crisfield, superintendent of the Wissahickon School District in Ambler, Pennsylvania, admits that his district has not fully adopted student policies regarding personal smart devices and their use on school grounds.

“Until last school year, there wasn’t even any mention (of cell phone use) in our textbook,” Crisfield said.

Last year, a Pennsylvania district began using “phone hotels” (cellphone storage devices) in the classrooms of its only high school – students put their cellphones in the devices during classes and retrieve them when they finish. The policy worked well, reducing distractions and even receiving high marks from students who welcomed the strategy that helped them reduce their phone use, Crisfield said.
