Fireworks Safety and Regulations Reminder

As Canada Day approaches, the Municipality of Meaford would like to remind everyone who plans to set off fireworks in celebration to stay safe, celebrate responsibly and follow the rules.

In our commune, family/consumer fireworks can only be launched on private property. Fireworks must be kept at least 8 meters (18.4 feet) away from all structures and vehicles.

To celebrate Canada Day, you can use fireworks from:

June 28, 2024 to July 4, 2024 from dusk to 11 p.m.

Fireworks users must be 18 years of age or older. The discharge of fireworks is prohibited on city property, boulevards and/or roadways (including all parks, open spaces and beaches). For more information, please review Regulation No. 46-2014 regulating firearms, fireworks and the prohibition of the use of firecrackers.

Fireworks are not permitted while a fire ban is in effect. To check your fire danger rating, visit Meaford.burnpermits.com or call toll-free 1-855-693-0080.

To avoid injury and minimize the potential risk of fire or property damage, follow these safety precautions:

  • Buy family fireworks from a reliable source.
  • Read the instructions carefully.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, at arm’s length, on a hard, flat and even surface.
  • Supervise children carefully.
  • Make sure viewers are at a safe distance.
  • Have a bucket of sand, a supply of water or a working fire extinguisher on hand.
  • Never keep a lit firework or attempt to re-light a “dud” or defective firework.

Fireworks can be stressful for pets, so keep pets in a safe room when using fireworks. Remember to show respect to your neighbors and have a safe Canada Day.
