Tinubu government worst in anti-worker policies – ASUU

The University Academic Union (ASUU), a branch of Ilọrin University, on Tuesday described President Bola Tinubu’s administration as the government with the worst anti-labor policies.

The union made this known while addressing journalists shortly after the peaceful protest, in which they expressed regret over the state of the nation and the education system.

Speaking at the ceremony, the union branch chairman, Comrade Felix Akanmu, said that just a year ago, when the current administration was inaugurated, there were high hopes for a timely resolution of their demands and revolution. He added that their expectations were based on the pseudo-democratic roles played by some prominent elements currently in power.

“We were deceived into bringing on board people who were leading the protests in this country. But now they are acting against nature and are more anti-work in their actions.

“At present, despite several efforts, the current government has not seen fit to meet ASUU officially. But we have a country to save and we will win,” he noted.

He added that “instead of committing to negotiated social packages and revitalization/proper financing of our institutions, he consciously maintained lines of frustration, blackmail and the use of hunger as a weapon to expose the essence of our struggles.

“The illegally dissolved and reconstituted governing council and university boards have been replaced by politicians,” Akanmu said.

Meanwhile, ASUU has given the federal government a four-week ultimatum to respond to its demands or face industrial action.

Addressing journalists after a peaceful protest at the Federal University Kashere (FUK), Gombe State, the ASUU Chairman, Comrade Shehu El-Rasheed, said they staged the protest over the non-payment of their academic allowances (EAA), withholding of salaries, failure to settle arrears of promotions and total rejection of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and will go on strike once the ultimatum expires.

In this regard, ASUU at the Benue State University (BSU) on Tuesday protested against the alleged total neglect of the Tinubu-led government towards public universities in the country.

The union, while marching on the BSU campus displaying placards with various slogans, called on energetic Nigerians who have the welfare of public universities at heart to intervene before it leads to another prolonged strike action.
