Haiti’s political sectors are asking the government to reject talks with gang leaders

Andre Michel, spokesman for the radical opposition Democratic and Popular Sector, urged Conille to ignore such requests.

“Let us not grant amnesty to criminal gangs that have kidnapped, raped, murdered and impoverished thousands of families,” Michel urged the government.

Michel’s request forms the backdrop to recent comments by gang coalition leader Jimmy Cherizier, alias Barbecue, who called for negotiations as a first step to restore peace to a country in chaos.

Barbecue said the best way for Haitian interim Prime Minister Gary Conille to bring peace to the nation is through dialogue.
