Marquette will begin implementing new mobile device security measures

Information technology departments will begin implementing new mobile security measures this summer and fall as part of an ongoing effort to protect you and the university from increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

ITS has met with groups on campus since the initiative was first announced last winter to gather feedback and address concerns. As a reminder, whether you are using a Marquette-owned or personal device, Marquette NO have access to any personal data stored on your device, including text messages, browsing history and photos. Where possible, Marquette has selected the least privileged option while ensuring data protection.

To ensure secure processing of university data, Outlook will be the mandatory email application on mobile phones and tablets after October 1.

What is mobile device management and mobile application management?

Protected mobile app management apps – which employees will be asked to download ONLY IF they access university Microsoft (Office) 365 apps on their personal devices – only manage specific apps (including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Word and PowerPoint). It does NOT manage the device itself. MAM is only used to secure university data – not personal data – in these applications.

Mobile device management is a more powerful tool that will only be applied to Marquette-owned devices. MDM uses MAM policies and device policies to secure application data and device settings. Marquette will provide updates and antivirus protection to keep Marquette-owned devices up to date and secure.

Both MDM and MAM provide employees with mobile tools to increase productivity while ensuring the security of university data. Because mobile devices can be used to access critical university data, they can pose security risks if compromised, stolen or lost.

A selection of frequently asked questions is available on the IT Services website. Anyone who has additional questions can ask them via this portal.
