Stock markets calmer ahead of Fed’s preferred inflation report

Several celebrities’ earnings reports dropped this morning

There are mixed feelings on the main indexes this afternoon as investors eagerly await tomorrow’s quotations inflation data and chip stocks are struggling. In the meantime, there have been some noteworthy earnings reports. At first glance, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) is slightly higher, the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) is flat, and the S&P 500 Index (SPX) is just below breakeven.

Drugstore giant Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) sees an exorbitant number of options today after lowering full-year earnings forecasts and missing quarterly earnings expectations. To date, 127,000 calls and 126,000 puts have appeared on the tape, representing 10 times the average intraday volume. The most popular is the weekly 7/5 put at 17.50, during which options are sold. The 2024 WBA is currently down over 54.7% and was most recently down 24.5% to $11.82, a new all-time low.

The company is currently one of the best players on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). BlackBerry Ltd (NYSE:BB)after the company posted better-than-expected first-quarter results. While equity was recently up 13.4% to $2.51, it is still far from its higher early 2021 lows and is down 29.7% in 2024.

Xpeng Inc. (NYSE:XPEV) is one of the worst-performing stocks on the NYSE, following reports that Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume bought a stake in the company and now plans to overtake more practical electric vehicles (EV) and software at both Xpeng and Rivian Automotive (RIVN). XPEV has recently seen a decline of 6.3% to $7.71 and has a loss of 47.4% year-to-date, with overall pressure at the 100-day moving average level.
