ENGIE Energy Access deploys 15 solar mini-grids in Zambia

ENGIE Energy Access has begun construction of 15 photovoltaic mini-grids in the Eastern Province of Zambia. The initiative is part of the Increasing Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production (IAEREP) programme, supported by the 11th European Development Fund and the European Union. The project aims to provide reliable electricity to underserved areas, thus promoting local economic development.

Goals and implementation

The project envisages the construction of 60 photovoltaic mini-grids by 2025 in five provinces. MySol Grid Zambia, a subsidiary of ENGIE Energy Access, is responsible for the construction, management and maintenance of this infrastructure. The first selected locations are Lusinde, Kandongwa and Nyimba Mwana, and commissioning is planned for the end of 2024. This project is being implemented in the context of problems with the supply of electricity in the country, which cause frequent power outages.

Funding and partnerships

In 2023, MySol Grid Zambia secured USD 7.5 million in financing from the Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI), managed by Cygnum Capital. This financing supports the construction of a mini-grid under the IAEREP program, representing a significant step forward for the solar mini-grid sector by attracting long-term, non-recourse financing.

Influence and development

Since its establishment in Zambia in 2017, ENGIE Energy Access has expanded its presence to employ over 250 staff, 650 independent sales agents and have over 60 points of presence across the country. The company has already sold over 300,000 solar kits and operates a mini-grid in Chitandika. The expansion of the solar mini-grid aims to improve access to electricity for approximately 40,000 people, supporting the development of local businesses and the regional economy. This initiative reinforces ENGIE Energy Access’s commitment to increasing access to electricity in Zambia and supporting the country’s electrification goals. By providing reliable, renewable energy, the project creates economic opportunities and improves livelihoods in rural areas.
