Airtel’s data center division is creating a green…

Bharti Airtel’s Nxtra data centre unit has joined the global RE100 initiative, becoming the first data centre provider in India to become a member of an organisation committed to sourcing 100% electricity from renewable sources.

In a statement, Nxtra said it had significantly increased its use of renewable energy, contracting a total of 422,000 MWh. The company said it reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by about 156,595 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in its last financial year ending March 31 by sourcing renewable energy through power purchase agreements and rooftop solar plants.

Nxtra CEO Ashish Arora added that the company is on a “sound path” to achieving net zero emissions targets, with a commitment to 100% renewable energy.

Nxtra operates 12 data centers and 120 edge facilities across India.

In September, Airtel agreed to acquire stakes in two local renewable energy companies to secure the purchase of green electricity to power six edge data centers.
