Taking over the Seafarers’ Trade is the next big step in recovery from injuries

Seattle Mariners reliever Gregory Santos has one more big step to take before he (hopefully) heads into rehab.

Santos, a power-throwing reliever acquired in the offseason from the Chicago White Sox, will host another live training session at T-Mobile Park on Friday.

This report comes from MLB.com:

The right fielder could soon be rehabbing in the Minor League if all goes well after his second live batting practice, which is scheduled for Friday, when the Mariners play a nine-game homestand.

Santos had his first live batting practice session last weekend in Miami, and the reports were solid. He’s been out since early spring training with a shoulder issue, so the rehab should be significant. The Mariners have all along expressed hope that Santos would be ready to join the group in July, which seems likely if he continues to report no setbacks.

He’ll have to check off a few boxes during his rehab assignment, namely throw a full inning, not feel pain the day after throwing, throw two days in a row and more. It would be understandable if he started rehab at Single-A Everett before moving to Triple-A Tacoma, since those two locations are closer to Seattle.

If and when Santos joins the Mariners, he should team up with Andres Munoz to form a solid backline for the team. The duo was also supposed to team with Matt Brash, but Brash is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Mariners will play the Twins on Friday night at 6:40 PM PT.
