Coaches with adjustable wheel sets and track gauge changing devices

The Spanish railway company Renfe and the Ukrainian “Ukrzaliznytsia” have started a pilot project aimed at creating trains that can adapt to different track gauges, reports a rail transport news portal Railway supplies.

Coaches with adjustable wheel sets and track gauge changing devices

This project was the topic of a recent press conference at which the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko and the Minister of Economy of Spain Carlos Cuerpo Caballero spoke.

The project focuses on development of wagons with adjustable wheel sets and devices for changing the wheel gauge.

These innovations will enable trains to easily switch from the 1,520 mm track gauge (typical in Ukraine) to the 1,435 mm and 1,668 mm track gauges used in Europe and Spain respectively. This approach aims to improve the connections of the Ukrainian railway network with Europe.

Julia Svyrydenko reported that an action plan for the implementation of the project is currently being developed. This includes the stages of design, testing and certification of the new system. Particular attention will be paid to testing and certification of trains in operating countries.

For the successful implementation of the project, it is planned to create a consortium of Spanish companies. These companies will apply to the Spanish Ministry of Trade to finance the project through the Corporate Internationalization Fund (FIEM). This fund will help financially support “Ukrzaliznytsia” in the implementation of the project.

Carlos Cuerpo Caballero emphasized that the project has not only economic but also symbolic significance. It will help strengthen Ukraine’s ties with European countries, which is especially important in the current circumstances.

The technical details of the project and its financial aspects are still being worked out, but Spain has already expressed its willingness to participate.

It was previously reported that Spain would share its innovative track-changing technologies with Ukraine.

This will help accelerate the adaptation of Ukrainian railways to European standards and improve the country’s transport infrastructure.

The initiative to implement adaptive trains is an important step towards the integration of the Ukrainian railway system with Europe.

It will open up new opportunities for passenger and freight transport, contributing to economic growth and strengthening international ties.
