Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy supplier and subsidiary of Southern Company, today announced the acquisition of its 30th solar project – the 150-megawatt (MW) South Cheyenne Solar Facility – from Qcells USA Corp. (Qcells USA).

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of our 30th solar project,” said Southern Power CEO Robin Boren. “This project strengthens our solar portfolio and exemplifies our commitment to the continued growth of Southern Power as we build the future of energy.”

The Wyoming-based project is Southern Power’s first solar facility in the state and contributes to the expansion of Southern Power’s clean energy fleet from California to Maine.

Construction is underway, and the commercial commissioning of the project is planned for the first quarter of 2024.

The South Cheyenne project was developed by Qcells USA, which is also responsible for the design, procurement and construction of the project, as well as the delivery of modules.

It is expected that approximately 180 jobs will be created during the project’s peak period.

“We pride ourselves on delivering unique development solutions and fostering strong, collaborative partnerships to advance renewable energy,” said Qcells USA President IP Kim. “We are proud to partner with Southern Power to deliver long-term value to Wyoming customers through the South Cheyenne Solar Facility.”

Once operational, the plant and associated renewable energy credits generated by the facility will be sold under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

With the addition of South Cheyenne, Southern Power’s solar portfolio totals more than 2,740 MW of photovoltaic installations.

Southern Power’s solar installations are part of the company’s 5,280 MW renewable energy fleet, which includes 30 solar and 15 wind facilities in operation or under construction.

This project is part of Southern Power’s overall business strategy to strengthen its wholesale business by acquiring and developing power generation assets under long-term contracts with strong credit-backed contractors.
