Parents, observers condemn perennial problems with school zoning policy – Society

Residents have been complaining about problems with the government’s zoned public school enrollment system, also known as PPDB Zonasi. Critics say this system will persist until the government addresses the underlying problems with the policy.

The PPDB Zonasi program, introduced in 2017, was intended to ensure more equitable access to public schools and eliminate the so-called “favorite schools” by allocating more places to students living nearby.

Government primary and secondary schools are required to allocate 70 per cent and 50 per cent of their annual quotas respectively to students using the PPDB Zonasi track.

An additional 15 percent of the available amount should also be allocated to students from lower-income families through an admission pathway called PPDB Afirmasi. Another 5 percent is allocated to students whose parents have transferred to the area for work, and the remaining places are allocated through student admission based on academic performance.

To this end, enrollment for the next academic year is in full swing across the country. However, concerns have been raised among parents regarding the implementation of Zonasi’s PPDB.
