What is the story

IBM has revealed plans to set up an artificial intelligence (AI) cluster in GIFT Town, Gujarat.

The cluster aims to provide a platform for banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) entities to experiment with artificial intelligence technologies.

Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India, said that this initiative will enable these entities to develop their own AI capabilities.

He also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government on behalf of IBM.

IBM’s role and expectations in the initiative

Patel detailed IBM’s role in the AI cluster initiative, stating that the company aims to provide the technical platform, capabilities and expertise to BFSI participants at GIFT City.

He emphasized that collective commitment is essential to achieve success, inviting all residents of the BFSI sector and government entities to cooperate.

Patel also stressed IBM’s responsibility to provide enterprises with trustworthy and responsible AI, which he saw as the heart of the agreement.

The AI cluster will be operated from IBM Software Labs

According to Patel, the AI cluster will operate primarily at IBM’s software labs located at GIFT City.

He highlighted the importance of their Watsonx platform in properly organizing data and enabling applications and use cases to be built.

The current model is to leverage both existing BFSI facilities and IBM’s own facilities for this initiative.

Additional MoUs Signed for AI Development in Gujarat

Gujarat government, Microsoft and Nasscom have signed a second agreement to set up an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence at GIFT City.

The aim of this centre will be to develop sector-specific AI use cases, secure data exchange, AI model training, infrastructure setup, pilot projects and AI model deployment across sectors.

Additionally, MoUs were signed for a capacity building programme aimed at training/certifying 25,000 students in AI and IT/ITeS skills.

Science City also launched STEM workshops for 10,000 secondary school students.
