Energy Minister Calls on Global Investors to Invest in Ghana’s Energy Sector


Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called on world leaders and energy experts to invest in Ghana’s energy sector as it expands to support economic growth, improve the quality of life of citizens and lead in sustainable energy in the sub-region and beyond.

Speaking at the African Energy Forum (AEF) 2024 in Barcelona, ​​Spain, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Dr. Prempeh highlighted Ghana’s potential in renewable energy, energy access and grid modernization, which requires massive investments in clean energy to meet needs growing population, business centers and industry.

He shared his thoughts on the future of energy in Ghana and across the African continent, highlighting the enormous potential of Ghana’s energy sector.

“We need your investments to unlock them, accelerate our economic growth, improve energy security and improve the quality of life of our citizens,” he appealed to world leaders and energy experts.

During the ministerial roundtable, Dr. Prempeh joined African energy ministers to discuss “Energy Systems for the Future”, focusing on balancing Africa’s needs with global goals.

He also met with the UK Trade Commissioner for Africa and energy sector leaders to develop a strategy for positioning Ghana’s energy sector for investment, particularly under the Powering Africa programme.

On the sidelines of the AEF, Dr. Prempeh met with senior World Bank officials to discuss the importance of consolidating efforts to create a stable, efficient and sustainable energy sector that can drive Ghana’s economic growth.

Additionally, he took part in a panel discussion entitled “Building coherent gas value chains and developing the infrastructure of the future.”

During this session, the Minister of Energy emphasized that “the industrialization of Africa will largely depend on the increased use of natural gas, as it is the most cost-effective fuel for power generation and other industrial processes as part of the global energy transformation agenda.”

The Minister’s commitment to AEF aims to position Ghana as a major energy investment destination, leveraging the country’s strategic location, favorable business environment and growing energy demand.

By leveraging its renewable energy resources and expertise, Ghana aims to become a model for sustainable energy development in Africa, setting an example for other countries to follow.
