Azerbaijan emphasizes the importance of transitioning to clean energy ahead of COP29

Azerbaijan, host of the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29), is prioritizing the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources, said the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov, News .Az reports.

Speaking at a forum in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Mammadov noted that Azerbaijan has managed to attract large investors in the development of the renewable energy sector.

“We managed to attract investments from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. We also continue to cooperate with the EU on other projects, which is why, according to Ursula von der Leyen, we are a reliable partner,” Mammadov emphasized.

The deputy minister recalled that in July 2022, a memorandum of understanding on the strategic partnership of Azerbaijan with the EU was signed, which contains two important elements.

“The first is to double the capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor, increasing it from the current 12 billion cubic meters to 20 billion cubic meters by 2027. The second important element is our environmental program and the transition to a green economy. And of course, for us, as a country that will host COP29 later this year, it is important now that we also work on the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources,” he added.
