Yogurt worth over Rs 1.5 billion sold only to formal sectors as people celebrated Asar 15 on Saturday – myRepublica

KATHMANDU, June 29: Yogurt sales in the formal sector alone stood at over Rs 1.54 billion on Saturday, the 15th Asar Day. The day, also known as National Rice Day, is celebrated across the country for eating yogurt, pounded rice and bananas.

Apart from this, according to estimates, there is also a yoghurt business in the informal sector worth around Rs 500 million.

The given quantity of yogurt was sold solely on behalf of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), Nepal Dairy Association and Dairy Industry Association.

Just an estimated 6.2 million liters of yogurt were sold by three dairy retailers on Saturday. Pralhad Dahal, president of the Nepal Dairy Association, said the yogurt was sold at an average price of 170 rupees per liter.

Moreover, according to President Dahal, Juju Dhau from Bhaktapur and additional yogurt worth at least Rs 500 million were sold through registered dealers across the country.

According to Arniko Raj Bhandari, former president of the Dairy Industry Association, the sales of yogurt on Asar 15 increase twice as compared to regular days.

On normal days, daily yogurt consumption from the formal sector totals 727,000 litres.
